Antioxidant



GLUTATHIONE
-produced in the human liver



-also known as gamma-glutamylcysteineglycine & GHS

-small protein composed of three amino acids:
~cysteine

~glutamic acid

~glyceine

-found in two forms:
~monomer:
single molecule of the protein
called reduced glutathione
active form of glutathione

~dimmer:
two the single molecules joined together
called oxidized glutathione
broken down to the single molecule by an enzyme called glutathione reductase

-white powder that is soluble in water & alcohol

-absorption rates of glutathione from food sources in the human gastrointestinal tract are low

-must be generated within the cell from its precursors before it can work effectively in the body

General Use
-cancer treatment

-antioxidant & free radical scavenger

-protecting cells from oxidative stress

-maintaining the immune system

-treatment of poisoning (e.g.paracetamol/heavy metal poisons)

-treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis


-increasing the effectiveness & reducing the toxicity of cis-platinum (chemo drug used to treat breast cancer)

-treating Parkinson's disease

-lowering blood pressure in patients with diabetes

-increasing male sperm count



-treatment of liver cancer

-treatment of sickle cell anemia

-increase energy

-improve concentration

-slow aging


-protect the skin

-enhancing the immune system

Side Effect
There are no established side effects to glutathione or to the substances used to elevate glutathione levels.But the medicine may be causing these:
~symptoms which may mean you are allergic to it:
breathing problems or tightness in your throat/chest
chest pain
skin hives, rash, itchy, swollen skin
tell your doctor if you have side effects that you think are caused by this medicine

Training & certification
-classified as an orphan drug for treatment of AIDS

-given intravenously for amelioration of the side effects of cisplatin therapy
Storage
-locked up & away from children

-away from heat & direct light

-do not store medicines in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink or in other damp places

-heat/moisture may cause the medicine to break down & not work the way it should work

-throw away medicine that is out of date

Warning
Before taking glutathione tell your doctor if you are pregnant/breastfeeding. Individual with liver malfunction is not supposed to take this product.

How Long Can a Person Take Glutathione & How Long Will the Effect Last after Stop the Treatment?
It can be taken permanently. In 1996, Italian study the therapeutic effect lasted 2 to 4 months after therapy was stopped.
